ATVs (All-Terrain Vehicles)

Farm ATVs (All-Terrain Vehicles) look easy to use and fun but these machines are unforgiving if the rider makes a mistake. An ATV is not a toy! ATV accidents have caused many deaths and injuries on farms - and not just to young people.

What is often not realised is the degree of physical strength needed to operate an ATV safely. As a general rule, a person under the age of 15 lacks the physical strength and size to control the machine properly. No one under the age of 12 is permitted to drive a farm ATV.

ATVs have handling characteristics that are different from a motor cycle or tractor. You need practical training in the special driving techniques, and your use should be supervised by a parent or employer.

Examples of ATV hazards:

  • Using ATVs on steep terrain, or in wet slippery conditions.
  • Overloading trailers - the trailer can jack-knife, causing the ATV to roll over.
  • Towing heavy implements across steep slopes.
  • Travelling too fast for the conditions.
  • ATV not properly maintained.

Some ways you can reduce hazards when using a farm ATV are:

  • Don't use a farm ATV unless you have had proper training in its use.
  • Be aware of the high-risk areas on the farm and 'no-go' areas. Keep to the safe routes at all times.
  • Keep speed to a safe and appropriate level.
  • Wear an approved helmet and solid footwear (boots) at all times. Depending on the situation, you may also need goggles and gloves.
  • Never carry passengers.
  • Don't tow implements such as trailers or spray tanks, or carry heavy loads such as hay bales.
