General hazards

As well as the specific hazards listed above, there are many general hazards on the farm which can cause harm.

Some examples are:

  • People working in jandals.
  • Equipment and hoses left where people can trip over them.
  • Welding or grinding without any eye protection.
  • Tractors which do not have roll over protection.
  • Reversing a tractor without looking back to see where the machine is going.
  • Uneven floor surface in a workshop may cause people to trip.

Some ways you can reduce the risk from general hazards on a farm:

  • Isolate dangerous animals in suitably fenced areas.
  • Make sure that farm buildings and sheds are kept clean and tidy.
  • Make sure that oil, grease and other liquids are cleaned up as soon as they are spilt.
  • Tie off ladders to ensure stability.
  • Handle chainsaws with care and follow safety directions provided by the manufacturer.
  • Keep all machinery guards in place.
  • Ensure farm gates are closed when not in use.
