Common hazards on farms If you work on a farm, it's important to learn about the common hazards and how to work safely. You may be involved in a range of work activities such as vehicle and machinery maintenance, working in a paddock, handling stock, felling trees or harvesting farm produce. A high proportion of young people in New Zealand work in the agriculture industry. Eight percent of young people aged between 15 and 19, and over 5% of young people aged between 20 and 24 who are working, work on farms. Statistics show that New Zealand farmers and growers, and their families, suffer more than their fair share of accidents and illnesses in earning a living. Young people are especially at risk.
