Accident Alert - Unguarded Transmission Machinery on Farms

The Department of Labour is concerned about the number of accidents that occur with unguarded transmission machinery on farms. Historically, unguarded transmission machinery on farms has resulted in serious injuries to and fatalities of operators, bystanders and children.

Hazards of In-Running Nips

In-running nips include nips formed between meshing gears, chains and sprockets and belts and pulleys.

Dangers arising from in-running nips include trapping of fingers, amputation and death.

Accident Case History

A child received a laceration to his arm when it was caught between meshing gear wheels on a seeding machine known as a ridger.

Prevention Measures

Children must not travel on ridgers or drills. Gear wheels must be guarded.

Hazard of meshing teeth.

Simulation of hazard contact.

Similar hazard securely guarded: Note Gear wheels visable are inoperative.
